‘WeChat’ Social App Comes to Nokia’s Asha Portfolio

Popular mobile social app – WeChat is now available for Nokia Asha smart phone users, it’s an out of the box social app that’s credited with enhancing user’s interactions with their friends by allowing them to exchange voice, text, emoticons and photos over a mobile or data network. Nokia Asha users can now enjoy WeChat’s ‘Hold-to-Talk’ signature feature that’s basically used to send voice messages. The app allows multiple chats with up to 40 online friends through its WeChat’s group chat feature. Currently, app developers have mainly targeted top mobile operating systems such as windows phone, android and iOS leaving out the likes of Nokia Asha series that comes installed with Nokia’s Asha software, its therefore good news to have WeChat on the Asha portfolio.

Following the developments, Moses Sitati who is in charge of Nokia’s Developer Engagement, innovation and corporate Relations in East Africa said the company was committed to continually enhancing user experience on Nokia’s Asha smartphones through social networking and messaging apps which continues to grow in popularity. “We are excited about WeChat’s support to launch WeChat for Nokia Asha smartphones. WeChat enriches the Nokia Asha user experience and we look forward to working closely with WeChat to bring even more innovative features to our customers across all our smartphones and in a growing number of countries and devices”, he added.

Designed to easily chat with friends or to connect with people from all around the world, WeChat enables users to add friends through various methods including connecting via phone books and WeChat ID. “We recently launched WeChat for the Asha range globally,” says Brett Loubser, Managing Director of WeChat Africa. “Ultimately we want as many people as possible across Africa to experience WeChat, and we understand the success Nokia has had with the Asha range on the continent. Delivering the best possible WeChat user experience is our highest priority, and we believe the new Asha version of WeChat will reinforce this ideal and delight our users”.

WeChat app only allows friends with necessary permissions to connect to communicate with other users as a precautionary measure in safeguarding user’s privacy. Against the backdrop of security and privacy concerns on social media, these measures leave users with a peace of mind, and ensure that users are sharing and interacting only with fellow users who are trusted contacts. The application is available for download in Nokia Store and official WeChat website.
